A marathon to celebrate Palestinian reconciliation took place in Gaza on Friday, and saw hundreds of men and women deliver “a message of hope”.
The event, organised by the Palestine Athletic Federation, saw hundreds of men and women take part, and included runners, cyclists and Paralympic athletes.
At least 23 were reported injured due to the collapse of a crane on the participants. Ashraf al-Qudra, spokesman for the Ministry of Health, said the conditions of the injured were between minor and moderate, with one serious injury and one child among those with moderate injuries.
The marathon was to celebrate the 12 October reconciliation agreement between Fatah and Hamas, which was signed in Cairo. The Palestinian Authority is set to manage the Gaza Strip and the West Bank by the end of December, hoping to end the decade-long division.
Early in November, the united Palestinian government took control of the administration of the three Gaza Strip crossings, in the first test of the agreement.
