Media across Africa was duped into publishing a fake story from a satirical website that claimed Chad was to militarily intervene in Libya to liberate migrants sold into slavery.

Media in Comoros, Mali, Benin, Senegal and elsewhere reported that a Chadian army spokesperson said the country’s forces would free migrants and deal with “the slavers who keep them”.

Even social media in Libya quoted the report, saying, “Demonstrations in front of Libyan embassies and indignation on social media will not change anything, two battalions of our valiant soldiers and the problem will be solved in a few days.”

The original story was published on a satirical website called State Afrique, which also claimed that Chad would invade the Caymen Islands, the Isle of Man and North Korea.
